Strips of aluminium foil or, later, treated paper cut to size to match the wavelength of the target radar (down to about half it's length in centimetres, I think). The British, Germans and Americans used it (not sure about the Russians), though ironically, the RAF suppressed use of it until the Hamburg raid in '43 for fear the Germans would imitate it though both had it available for use from about '42. The Germans countered it (to some extent) by use of the 'Wils Sau' (Wild Boar) and Zahme Sau (Tame Boar) tactics, airborne radar ffitted to nightfighters (not good, but got better) and, later by the use of radar detection kit onboard their nightfighters who tracked the emissions of the RAF H2S target acquisition (bombing) radar.
