Joy of Six are Go

So it's nearly 6.30 am and all is ready to be loaded into Lee's car in less than an hour. My son is about to be dragged out of bed, though he will be more than happy to be on the get go. Looking at my pile of stuff it seems a little light but I am sure Lee is making up for it with not just his troops but also the boards.

Hope to see some of you guys there later, doors open at 10am, we are rolling up at 8am so we can get set up and start the game.

Of course I could not help but buy the new released on the day figures, French in 1815 uniform and also in Greatcoat. Line infantry and skirmishers. I need to get the new artillery crews and some flags today. At least I have nine battalions to count against these twenty four purchased. A small blip soon to be painted flat again :-)

Igor even had a love letter for me, well until he explained the kisses were in fact gravestones! OOps

My son was well received and had a rare old time of it, though today I think will top the Saturday. I have had the tour before but it was great to do it a second time and it was a treat to see how the figures are made. Sorry forgot the camera!!!

Baccus Open Day and Joy of Six Show Update

I received the following e-mail yesterday and thought it a good idea to pass on the information regarding the Baccus Open Day and Joy of Six show.

With less than a month to go to the Great Big Fat Baccus Weekend things are moving apace here are at Baccus HQ. I won't say panic is setting in - more of a dawning realisation of what we have let ourselves in for!

So if you want to go to the open day you are running out of time to book a space.

Other Baccus news is that I just need to do the basing of the new French in Bicorn and so will be reviewing these again. I have come to the conclusion that the only real way you can review figures is by painting them, anything else is just a brief walk through.

I suppose it's now appropriate to start bigging up the weekend, so without further ado we'll start with the Baccus Open Day on Saturday 20th July. There are still places available to book, although the afternoon session is getting very full. The whole tour is free and you even get free chocolate Hobnobs. The following Sunday is, of course, The Joy of Six show. This will showcase 6mm gaming with great looking demonstrations, participation games and hands-on painting workshops. With a range of 6mm traders and games covering all from Ancients through to the Cold War, this will have something for everyone. 

Both Nick Dorrel and Chris Grice will be there, showcasing their new SYW and WSS rules respectively. I believe that interested parties are more than welcome to take part in both games to see how they play. Per Broden will also be staging a spectacular GNW battle (Klissow) which will be played using Nick's GNW rules. This will be one not to miss!

Baccus Open Day and Joy of Six

Last year, Lee and myself went over to Baccus HQ for a tour of the workshop where Baccus figures are made. This was hugely interesting and you can check out our day here. 

This year Peter is again putting on the same event and if you have the chance to go I would fully recommend that you go. Due to space constraints places are limited so it's best to contact Peter as soon as you know you can get over.

It's two or so hours well spent and really gives you a good understanding of how Baccus and other companies make the figures and what it takes to go from a lump of green stuff to production runs. My wife took the place of one of the guys who could not make it and had a great time and tended to ask better questions than the rest of us just as Peter had prophesied before the event (curse her).

By this point you should have an idea if such an event is of interest to you but I have to say that even though I knew I wanted to go and thought I knew what was coming it was a real surprise at how much I enjoyed the day. Indeed not only was the journey home filled with a three way conversation about various aspects that caught each of our interest but the train journey to the Sheffield Irregulars and Baccus show the following day remained a continuation of the debrief. In fact the two days ended up being the highlight of all the con's I went to that year.

By the way, I am not suggesting to go to this if you are not interested in the hope it will interest you, what I am saying is that if you think you want to go you will find it ended up being so much better than you expected. So much so that some people go back for second helpings in following years. I also talked with Matt (who had been in a previous year) and he also had tales to tell. It's great that Peter opens up the doors, even better that you get a cuppa (and a bicky or two if you look like you will part with cash) but of course Peter knows what he is doing. Not only do you get a feel for the history of Baccus but through the time spent at Baccus HQ you get to feel the product. Most of us seemed to leave with either those extra items required for the ongoing project or like Lee and myself (the following day) a whole new project as this was where Lee finally caved into my desire to do ECW in 6mm not his favoured 10mm, not that he has yet painted a single figure for this (hint hint).

So if all the places have not gone get yourself into the fun, oh and the evening brings more fun with a curry for those who can make it. I think next year we may go back if only for the curry night.
