Napoleonic Prussian Command by Adler

Sorry for the lack of posting been away with work a few days then the works Christmas party was last night so not been around.

Good job I have more figures to show from last month as I have not had much time at all at the desk. Anyway on with the show. Whilst painting up the Prussian regiments I also got these Adler command painted up. This batch actually doubles the number of command bases I own and gives me enough for Project Waterloo so another tick in the completed box.

I now have sixteen command stands and still have loads of command figures left over. These will possibly be needed when I expand the rest of the army as well as being added to some of the infantry battalions bases so most should get used.

A nice mix of poses and uniform style, while most are painted in grey or blue I had some fun with the Hussar ADC's, with the Prussian's you need to take opportunities where you can.

So this leaves me with a few battalions of infantry, a few cavalry regiments and a bunch of guns to paint up. These are stuck in the queue as I am working on the two Hougoumont sets that will be released by Leven in the next month or so. Should have them finished in the next week or two so it's going to cramp any figure painting as I just don't have any room on the table.

A Russian Perspective 1812??

I have got in not one but two games of Napoleonic's recently, first with my Prussians getting a good trouncing at the hands of Matt but I was so absorbed I failed to take any photo's but lets just say when I started to loose my right flank my attack on the left that could have changed the tide was lost when Matt came out punching and charged off his hill and routed the first line and it was enough to first stall my attack and then drive back my army. Well played Matt, victory will be mine..... one day.

The second game was playing with Loki's Russians against Kev's French. Whilst I did get some photo's of the game they were rather self central so do not give the best view of the whole battle but I will try and give a fuller account.

My task was to hold the left flank against an expected attack and thus control the bridge over the river and with my central force hold the hill allowing the French to come to me. For the two tasks I had two Divisions of infantry each supported by guns and two regiments of Cuirassiers to help out the centre.

My opposite number for the evening Glen indeed sent a Division to try and force our left. Glen's Division was a third larger than mine but had the same number of guns. In my favour was a constricted frontage not allowing Glen to use all his numbers in one go but the ability to grind me down. The other advantage was to prove key to my defence and that was the village on the tables edge as pictured above. Unable to ignore it Glen threw in two battalions against the defending one but under Black Powder it's a tough nut and whilst taking fairly heavy casualties I was able to repulse the first attack.

Supporting the village I had two more battalions in line one behind the other and a battery of guns. The battle started well as both the guns and infantry were able to inflict the first casualties and more importantly disorder the French stopping them closing quickly. Not that I did not suffer as well but for me not being able to move my units was far less a problem than it was for the attacking French.

On the hill I again was forcing French infantry to stall through the rolling of sixes at will. Unfortunately not only did Kev have yet more troops to step into the gaps but he was saving on almost all of his casualties and worse still a failure of two units to pass command rolls made it look like my flank would be crushed.

Several turns later saw the village suffering it's third attack and by this point it needed help and after surviving the initial combat I threw in a supporting battalion into the flank of one of the columns leaving my own unit open to a flank attack of it's own.

Close up of the two flank attacks. Glen had horrid dice all evening but this combat was to go my way with two of the four battalions he had engaged routing from the table, another retiring badly beaten with only the fourth in reasonable condition. I in turn had one very shaky battalion but due to the French being unable to advance for a full turn I was able to bring in a fresh battalion into the village and rally back some of the lost troops, especially the gun battery that had come very close to being removed.
Meanwhile Kev's attack on my flank was causing a lot of trouble but was filing to break my line. Eventually my units would be forced to retreat back from the top of the hill but by then I had other troops in place to force Kev back.

Glen's Division was broken by my going onto the offensive and picking on a battalion that was already mauled and he was not helped at all failing a command roll to try and rally back their casualties not once but twice. Other failed command rolls and disorders meant that Glen was never able to use his numbers in attack nor regain units that had taken a beating.

My heavy cavalry about to launch into Kev's troops, I was to beat these then follow them up only to be beaten by them. Not so bad that they were out of the game far from it but it was a surprise to see such good troops could be beaten by troops that were very combat worn.

Elsewhere in the battle Loki blundered and moved his best infantry to a position where Kev's Dragoons could charge into the flank though it took a whole turn of inactivity on both sides before Kev had the ability to get the charge to go in. The Grenadiers survived the first round (but mauled to hell) and then won one melee and drew the second, again infantry doing the unexpected. My horse took casualties whilst standing doing nothing and came close to being lost as I seemed to be under disorder forever whilst Kev brought up more of his Dragoons but I managed to move back and Loki saved my blushes but in the process got his cavalry beaten up but did the same to Kev's forcing a stalemate that could only benefit us.

Less action was had by the rest of the infantry but we did enough to make the second French infantry Brigade to be unable to fight on though we had been beaten silly as well. The battle ended with us in control of the field but not in good enough order to follow up on our success.

So that was the end of my first Black Powder game and it was a blast, though having such a successful game through hot V cold dice did help. Really looking forward to playing these rules again. I have a few concerns with the cavalry but I suspect more play and some tinkering will solve any issues. Whilst they can be used with large numbers of units I don't see it working with my 6mm as we are based in either line or column and can't represent the column and line the way you can with the multi based units.

Bloody Orcs

Anyone paying close attention to my Lead Mountain posts may realise I have claimed a number of finished models yet to be seen on the blog, well to start addressing this I present seven orcs that have already seen action in a roleplaying session.

I bought these from a very disorganised vendor at last years Castle Donnington show so they have been in my queue for a little over a year. Given how long so much of the figures have been waiting not too bad.

They are old Grenadier sculpts but had been (according to the seller) cast more recently though some of the figures had that old lead look about them. They had large mould lines on them which took a lot cleaning but did leave nice looking figures.

I started them quite a while ago but as I already have quite a number already and as such did not actually need them until the other night when I needed far more than the players could handle and we had a right old time of the players (and others) fighting a running battle through the streets.

I wanted them to look as if they had been busy hacking up other humans so went heavy with the blood on the swords, well it is Fantasy after all. Only got a decent shot of the backs as the camera focused on the background.

Still got a few more posts to do on the figures painted in October, yes I am that far behind which will be a good job I think as I have a busy month ahead of me with a few nights away.

Hail Caesar Rules

So far I have just played the one game of Hail Caesar and it was enough for me to start looking out for a cheep copy and as seems to often be the case these days I found one of Amazon Marketplace. This new copy cost me a little over £15 plus postage and it's in perfect condition so a bargain in my eyes.

Having ordered the rules I then find out that Matt bought a set at Castle Donnington so I have another opportunity to play them outside the Thursday games at Kev's. I am not ready to consign the Field of Glory rules to past tense and will need to play a lot more games of both (hint Lee and Matt) but either way I am fairly sure I will be going down the route of these for the 6mm ancients due to the ability to have single base of units and Impetus did not float my boat.

Of course now I have the rules Kev and co have moved onto Black Powder for Napoleonic's which is what we played last night. Given that it was cracking fun I can find it in myself to forgive them LOL.

I will do a report on the game sometime over the weekend though the images are very own perspective as I just concentrated on my own troops.

Other news is that I will be taking part in the 5th Analogue Pinting Challenge and have set a personal target of 1000 points but this time the main concentration will be 15mm as I get the Romans painted up as well as getting the rest of my Persian and Successors armies finished off in 15mm, well the figures I have at least.

Adler Prussian Line Regiments

I have been really motivated to getting all the figures for Project Waterloo finished this side of Christmas and I gave it a boost with these six Battalions. I actually can get away with just two more Battalions of Landwehr for the infantry though I will also paint up the third Battalion for other games whilst I am at it. Probably not this month though as I feel like taking a bit of a break from the infantry but I still expect to paint up some 6mm this month.

Here we have all three Battalions of the 10th Line Regiment (1st Silesian)  which were part of the IV Corp 13th Infantry Brigade. IV Corp was the most committed at Waterloo having missed out on the fighting two days prior.

1st Battalion in column marching past a discarded limber, The regiment has yellow facings being from Silesia and this regiment has really colourful red flags which I happened to actually have.  Again I also painted up a number of command figures to add to the bases.

The 2nd Battalion, also in column marches on, I really enjoy spending the extra time on the flags. Folding them into wind tussled or folded heaps and painting the edges only takes about 5-10 minutes a flag but the result is much better than the straight flap of paper.

The Fusilier Battalion had Jagers attached where the other two did not s adds a nice point of difference though our rules do not treat these different for the Prussians.

Rear view of the 1st and 2nd Battalions. The blanket role always adds to an otherwise plain uniform and helps distinguish them as Prussian.

The 11th Line Regiment (2nd Silesian) is the sister of the 10th and the only difference is that the 1st and 2nd Battalions carried blue colours. The 11th was also in the IV Corp but was in the 14th Infantry Brigade.

1st Battalion, in this case I based them on a rather loose look as I did not cut the figures off their original bases. It's better to do so but it does add to the time to finish but that's a poor excuse really.

2nd Battalion is in line and benefited from me being rather less lazy. Whilst I enjoyed painting all these up I started to rush the end game and as such started to loose patience with myself and is part of the reason I am taking most of November off. Not because I don't want to do them or am enjoying it but to get away from the sense of rushing them. I want to enjoy and relax into the last troops and not feel the need to push on.

I based the Fusilier Battalion also on spaced bases so they ended up in three ranks, something I think works do to the way they fought quite often.

This completes all the regular infantry, I still have a few line and reserve figures, enough for about six or nine battalions so these will be done at my leisure and enough Landwehr to paint up about twelve battalions so these will also get to the painting desk, probably when we decide to do the other big battle of the 100 Days. I also plan to paint up the four regiments of Prussian Cuirassiers I bought from Adler when I first bought the Prussians as I always planned to use them beyond the 1815 campaign. They will be done sooner than the spare infantry but I can't say beyond that.

Secret Santa - A Wish List of Sorts

I guess I should follow in others footsteps and put up a list of possible type of things I would like to find under the tree but if you have followed this blog for any length of time my Santa may already have an idea or two of their own but in no particular order.

28mm Cowboys. Got more than I need but when has that ever stopped us. Could even be props for the game.

28mm Saga figures for any of the following Welsh, Scotts, Bretons, Anglo Saxon, Jomsvikings, Strathclyde, Irish, Franks, Norse Gaels or Norman's, yes an excuse to expand by Saga forces.

28mm Nice fantasy monster/s

1/72 Russian Tanks, anything as I don't have any and plan to cater for all periods of the war.

20mm Russian infantry with heavy weapons such as mortar HMG, ATR  etc.

15mm Dominate Roman Legionaries, I have Essex and 2015 will see these get some love, happy for other makes that fit with Essex.

15mm  Magister Militum Pike (ALM4) got four large blocks but when does that ever stop us.

6mm Polish Napoleonic's Baccus or Adler
6mm French Guard Baccus or Adler

6mm Ancients
Phalangites AMA1 and 3 Open handed pike from Baccus
Companion Cavalry AMA5
Thracian Infantry AMA10
Generals AGR13
Psiloi Bow AGR4
Whilst I list Baccus that's because these are what I know so happy for others.
This as you can see is a new distraction but feel free to ignore it.

Or anything else at all, that's the great thing about the Secret Santa, I have no idea what it will be and as such it's got to be great.

Lady In Blue

I needed another female figure for an encounter in Saturdays game so I painted one up the evening before. This is a very nicely sculptured Blacksword Miniatures figure. DSM-1115 Early Snow Female Wizard sculptured by D Mize and whilst I don't think they are worth the £8 price tag they often come with but I was happy with the £4.50 I paid for her.

I did not really want the dagger in her hand but did not have the time to find a suitable replacement so went with it. She is another Aise Sedi that enters the plot and joined up with the party after an action packed night as the players stumbled from one bad encounter to the next. Fortunately they were mostly facing orcs rather than Trolorc's or Fades. Their greater experience is starting to count as they mostly protect their own and don't too often get separated and picked on. Well at least when it happens they know to defend and await rescue, that kept two of them alive on the night.

So not a lot of colours used but lots of layers starting with Vallejo Dark Prussian Blue and then mixing in to it ever lighter shades until I was adding Andrea Blue. Each new colour had between two and three helpings each added one at a time so the colour change was reasonably gradual.

I have a number of ideas that will see this female wizard get a few outings over the coming months, well unless she gets killed which is quite possible around this lot of players. The city they are in has just about fallen to the orc's and worse and it's now all about trying to get out alive. As such it was quite a surprise to see the party head further into the city rather than to the walls.
