15mm Hoplites

I don't know the make of these Hoplites, though the commander is from Essex Miniatures. Not that I need to know as I don't plan on buying any of them as the figure is not the greatest and the heads came off a couple of other models when I was cleaning them up leaving me with figures that won't get painted up.

All that said they were reasonably easy to paint up so if I needed a few units in a hurry they would be fine. It's been a long time since I last painted Hoplites and in those days I was all Chariot Miniatures and they would still be my main go to guys.

The back and breast armour seems to be scale armour rather than the typical solid metal or leather cuirass more typically found. Still it adds another Hoplite block to my armies though I am not exactly short of them in the first place.

If we go deep into Hail Caesar I can see having many more units as useful, I don't see me buying a Hoplite army but given the cost of a Hoplite unit is half that of a Pike Phalanx in money I see the advantage. Under Hail Caesar the points cost is the same even though the Phalanx is a stronger unit. But the phalanx has one weakness in that troops can not pass through them as they are not in battle line formation. That means falling through supports results in combat can cause the ordered unit to disorder messing up it's support of the new front unit.

So I guess I give these guys 6 out of 10 and they could end up on E-Bay to be replaced by other figures I like more.

With Triples in just over a week I have to decide what to have on my shopping list. I don't see much as I will probably still be looking for work. I have three interviews scheduled but two of these are just after Triples though the other could be just before. I will be picking up some more pike phalanx figures but these are for 6mm beyond that it's bases and that's all. So maybe this year my son will be getting the best of it as he gets to play more games.

  1. I think they look quite good though the scale armor is a bit odd

  2. Nice work Ian, the figures look like the old company Chariot minis, now sold by Magister Militum??

    1. I have the old Chariot and these are not those. Also the metal seems brittle whilst Chariot have some give in them.

I will keep an eye out for them as I could do with one more pack to complete a second unit

    1. Thanks, I do like to have varied designs on the shields as it seems more fitting than the same design. Of course on pike blocks I tend to just have the same image
