Friday Quiz 7

Well Friday came round fast, so better get on with it. Remember it's fine to use Google etc. to find the answers, just mention if you did.

1. At what battle did Julius Caesar finally defeat Pompey?

2. What was the name of Prince Rupert's Poodle that he had with him during the ECW?

3. Which British cavalry regiment was known as the "Cherrypickers?

4. In which war did the battle of Wal Wal (or Ualual) take place?

5. What was used to block RADAR during WWII?

Hopefully at least one reasonably easy to answer question, lets see how you do.

Answers

1. Pharsalus 48BC

2. Boye or Boy works for me

3. The 11th Hussars, because of their cherry-red trousers

4. The Italian-Ethiopian War (1935-36) where it was reported that some of the Italian light tanks were picked up and turned on their sides/tops!

5. Chaff

  4. * The Battle of the Solent - Reports say Harry Redknappus first commanded for Pompey then went to Soton, switch sides and went back to Pompey (anybody who doesn't follow English football won't have a clue what I'm on about).

    * I never really watched Extreme Championship Wrestling. I sometimes watch TNA on a Sunday night - I remember the late British Bulldog, Davey Boy Smith's dog was called Winston.

    * My original answer is too rude for publishing.

    * Pass. (after Google - only thing I know about the conflict is from Wilbur Smith's "Cry Wolf")

    * Pirate Radio?

  8. OK standby:

    1. Pharsalus
    2. Boy
    3. 11 Hussars (old Cardigan paid a fortune to outfit them)
    4. Ethiopia in 1934. Opening skirmish of the 2nd Italo-Abyssinian (Ethiopian) War
    5. Chaff or 'Window. Strips of aluminium foil or, later, treated paper cut to size to match the wavelength of the target radar (down to about half it's length in centimetres, I think). The British, Germans and Americans used it (not sure about the Russians), though ironically, the RAF suppressed use of it until the Hamburg raid in '43 for fear the Germans would imitate it though both had it available for use from about '42. The Germans countered it (to some extent) by use of the 'Wils Sau' (Wild Boar) and Zahme Sau (Tame Boar) tactics, airborne radar ffitted to nightfighters (not good, but got better) and, later by the use of radar detection kit onboard their nightfighters who tracked the emissions of the RAF H2S target acquisition (bombing) radar. Not such a smart Alec - I was an electronic warfare operator in the navy; we had to lear this stuff for 'background' ;O)
