Quiz Time

Ok for a bit of fun, I thought I would run a few questions every now and then, you the avid reader try and answer them. No scoring or keeping note who has got the most right, just the usual bragging rights.

The only rule is that you declare if you used the internet for your answer to a question, it's not disallowed or frowned upon, this is just for fun after all.

So lets start with Ancient to 1600 and the first seven questions.

1. What role did Odone Dora and Carlo Grimaldi fulfil at Crecy?

2. Who was Emperor when Rome successfully invaded Britain?

3. Arsuf (1191) was the main triumph of which commander in the Third Crusade?

4. What was a cakthrop?

5. What was a petronel?

6. What was lacking in the general who reconquered Italy for the Emperor Justinian during the 6th Century?

7. What were aiguillettes?

OK have some fun

  3. Ooooh, I love a good quiz. Only able to put answers to three (and two of those I'm a bit unsure of.)

    2) Claudius

    5) It's a gunpowder weapon isn't it?

    6) Belisarius? There's a story he pissed off Justinian and got his eye poked out!

    6. Belisarius might have lacked loyalty, for which he was sacked by Justinian
    7. shoulder distinctions worn by for example drummers in Napoleonic period, much like epaulettes

done without digital assistance from the top of my head, without looking at other answers and in a few minutes. Not too optimistic about my score

  6. 1. I'd agree that they were leaders of the Genoese crossbow mercenaries (not s ure though and net wasn't any help!)
    2. Big Julie just visited, but it was Claudius who came and stayed.
    3. Richard Couer de Lion beat Saladin (internet help!)
    4. Cakthrop? Do you mean caltrop?
    5. Early cavalry firearm (internet help!)
    6. I think Steve got it! After Belisarius was recalled, a eunuch (whose name escapes me!) carried on the campaign and broke the Gothic hold on Italy.
    7. I only know of aiguillettes from the Napoleonic period as looped cords around the shoulder and attached to the tunic buttons. I suppose they originated from some piece of armour, like the gorget was.

  10. 1. What role did Odone Dora and Carlo Grimaldi fulfil at Crecy? Genoese mercenaries serving the King of France, though I would need to fact check that.

    2. Who was Emperor when Rome successfully invaded Britain? Successfully? Hadrian.

    3. Arsuf (1191) was the main triumph of which commander in the Third Crusade? Richard I

    4. What was a cakthrop? Metal spikey bit to maim horses.

    5. What was a petronel? Siege engine but that is a guess that I think is off.

    6. What was lacking in the general who reconquered Italy for the Emperor Justinian during the 6th Century? No clue.

    7. What were aiguillettes? Heraldic plaques worn on the shoulders in combat at the end of the 13th century until about 1320 when they fell out of style. No value as armour purely used for identification in the age before heraldically blazoned surcoats.

So next Friday it will be seven questions between 1600 and 1914 and the following Friday expect after 1914.

Also to make it more fair I plan to start the quiz each time at different times so it's not the Brit's at lunch who get first shout.
